I took some French classes when I was in Elementary School. I still have to learn a lot of French if I can remember any of them though.

Learning foreign languages is best in lower grades, in my opinion. It is put into your brain at a younger age and therefore the language (even though it may just be the basics) will stay with you longer.
I know a sophomore who took 3 years of german and is can't even say "I love my mother." A simple sentance.

Freshman year? No way am I joining some language class. I got enough stresses as it is! I was planning on taking Spanish 1 Sophmore year, and Spanish 2 Junior. So I can have Senior year without any giberish from that penquin of a spanish teacher of mine. Figurativley speaking.

It'll definitely will spark the brain at the younger age, that's for sure, and hopefully, you could remember the language that you took, if it's necessary. - Really? Wow. I feel bad for that sophomore person that took three years of German and can't say a simple-like sentence. Dang.
